Be totally present – Lessons from Figure Skating

30 Mar

This is the second post for a new category called “Lessons from Figure Skating”

Here I discussed lessons learned from the journey that Camila is following to her goal of participating the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. These lessons are not helpful only to figure skaters or those who dream with participating in the Olympics but for anybody.

In Figure Skating you need to be totally present. There is no time to think in what happened yesterday or to worry about what might happen next week. When you are skating you are here now.

When Camila skates, she is totally present, experiencing the sound of the music, being one with her body, enjoying the graceful movements, the inertia, the gravity, the sound that the blades of her skates create while moving across the ice. being totally aware of what she is doing…

It doesn’t matter if she is receiving the feedback from her coach,  practicing her routine or trying new jumps.

Being totally present in the moment is a requirement in Figure Skating.

This is a lesson that we all could beneficiate from learning it. Being able to forget about reminiscences and worries. Being able to live the present, being here and now, enjoying the blessings and lessons that the current moment provides.

Learn to fall – Lessons from Figure Skating

14 Mar

This is the first post for a new category called “Lessons from Figure Skating”

Here I discussed lessons learned from the journey that Camila is following to her goal of participating the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. These lessons are not helpful only to figure skaters or those who dream with participating in the Olympics but for anybody.

In Figure Skating if you want to improve your skills level you always will be trying new things and while you are trying these new things you are going to fall. Not a couple of times but hundreds of times. So if you are going to fall often, better if you get a master on falling.

Camila is one of the skaters who fall more often in her practices. Does she love to fall? Yes, we cannot hide that, you will see her laughing at the ice, taking herself from the ice and attempting again that new jump…

But additionally, she have learned how to fall, you will see her totally relaxed when falling. Is this good? Yes, if you get tense and rigid, you can break a bone yourself very easily.

Because of her continuous practice she doesn’t worry about hurting herself when falling. This provides her more confidence so she can always try new movements or jumps without fearing a fall.

Does falling on practice prevents her from falling on competition? No, Camila has fallen in several competitions and she know that this is part of the fun of this exciting sport. All the champions have fallen during competitions!

I know that this is a lesson that we all could beneficiate from learning it. In any activity on our life we might fail and we should get used to fail and try again. We should very flexible even when we are failing. The most we get used to failing we might develop more and more our skills.

The benefits of competing

05 Mar

Camila is attending a Figure Skating Competition tomorrow, March 6, 2010.

She is excited and looking forward to compete.

Why is she participating?

Here are several benefits that a Figure Skater obtains from competing:

1. She might win. Everybody would like to win, but this can not be the only purpose. This is actually will be one of the points that she should care less.

If Camila competes, it is always nice and pleasing to win. This means that the strategy is working, that the judges observed some aspects of her skating that are giving better scores compared with her competitors.

However, anyone who participates is winning, just see the below points…

2. In the other hand, the main purpose of participating in a competition is the practice. Usually when she practices at the arena there are other girls skating so she has to interrupt her skating sometimes to prevent a minor accident… In the competition she will be able to concentrate totally because she will be alone at the arena. Not only this, she will have to concentrate while a crowd is watching, so she will require to develop a better concentration. Continuous practice is different venues is really great.

3. There is public there… In the competition there are more people watching. It is very pleasing to skate in front of a crowd. Yes, any person who figure skates is a celebrity while s/he is at the rink and this is very rewarding and builds more self-esteem for any skater…

4. She may get no medal. This would mean that she didn’t get any of the three first places, maybe even she might get the last place in the competition. Would this mean anything? Not really. Those who think that who win are winners tend to think that who lose are losers. This is a big mistake.

However, when she doesn’t win a medal, she receives a feedback that shows her which aspects of her skating should be improved. She will obtain specific points that requires improvement.

Camila, Good Luck and Enjoy it!
